Traffic bedlam

This week was really "one for the books" in Montgomery County. On Wednesday morning, it seems that the computer system that controls the synchronization of traffic lights broke down....totally. Although all the lights were working, there was absolutely no synchronization between any of the lights. In all areas where traffic was heavy, the delays were monumental.

On Wednesday night, we went to Costco fro some shopping. Although our trip there was uneventful, the trip home was quite different. Going home, we got on the Beltway fine. However, after we passed the New Hampshire exits, we came to a grinding halt.

After about a half hour we reached the next exit (University Blvd.). But that's when the real fun began. It took over a half hour to get through the four-corners intersection.

From what I understand, the computer system used by the county is one that they purchased over 30 years ago. Although it's been recognized that the system was antiquated and needed replacement, no one imagined what a nightmare would be caused by a system breakdown. Also I think they've been unable to fund it. My guess is that now that the alternative of sticking with the old system and the potential impact is known, they will probably find the funding for an upgrade or replacement.

By Friday, all was back in order and working. It would be interesting to know the details of what actually went wrong and why it took so long to fix.

All's well that ends well.
